Realization of Cantonese Rising Tones under Different Speaking Rates
نویسنده
چکیده
The two Cantonese rising tones, high-rising and low/mid-low rising tones, are found to maintain their distinct slopes of F0(fundamental frequency)-rise and offset F0 under different speaking rates. This suggests the two as possible acoustic cues for rising tone discrimination. The rising contours, under whichever speaking rate, reside in area temporally near the syllable offset. Furthermore, through tests with different alignment methods, the rising contours are found to show the most significant overlap when aligning with offset of the host syllable. Finally, discussions on characterization of rising tones within the Target Approximation (TA) model are presented.

Tone perception ability of Cantonese-speaking children.
Studies have shown that while children acquire all Cantonese tones by age two, they are not able to label them reliably until approximately age 10. One possible explanation for the large age discrepancy may be the different methodologies used. This study aimed to (1) investigate a new research design for the collection of reliable tone perception data from young children; (2) compare lexical an...
متن کاملCantonese-Speaking Children Do Not Acquire Tone Perception before Tone Production—A Perceptual and Acoustic Study of Three-Year-Olds' Monosyllabic Tones
Models of phonological development assume that speech perception precedes speech production and that children acquire suprasegmental features earlier than segmental features. Studies of Chinese-speaking children challenge these assumptions. For example, Chinese-speaking children can produce tones before two-and-a-half years but are not able to discriminate the same tones until after 6 years of ...

Materials and Methods 225 three-year-old Cantonese-speaking children with normal hearing and language development were recruited. The three basic Cantonese tones of high level (T1), high rising (T2) and low falling (T4) tones were used for experimental testing. Participants were required to point to the corresponding pictures after live voice presentations. Possible factors contributing to tone...
متن کاملAcoustic Analysis of the New Rising Tone in Hong Kong Cantonese
Hong Kong Cantonese has six contrastive tones. A previous study, however, has indentified a group of speakers who merged the high rising tone with the low rising tone in both production and perception. This study investigated the acoustic characteristics of the rising tones produced by three mergers and three non-mergers identified in the previous study, and consequently, characterized the mech...
متن کاملSpeaker variability in the production of coarticulated tones
Previous studies on lexical tone as a speakerdiscriminant feature focused mainly on tone production in isolation or with a fixed tonal context. The present study reports an experiment on the production of Cantonese and Mandarin tones in different tonal contexts and speaking rates. Results show that while speakers show considerable variation in tone production in both languages, speaking rate an...
